Baraboo company's handiwork will add sparks to the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing tonight.I bet after the games, China will be building their own HAARP.
The televised festivities will feature two 40-foot Tesla coils shooting 100-foot sparks that were partially built by Resonance Research Corp., a Baraboo firm that makes equipment for science museums.
The coils, shaped like two large doughnuts, will stand on two 40-foot towers and can generate 20 million volts of electricity, said Durlin "D.C." Cox, president and CEO of Resonance Research Corp. The device produces a voltage that is about the equivalent of 1.7 million standard car batteries.
"They're just going to shoot giant sparks," he said.
Durlin's company was known for building the biggest Tesla coil in the world, which can spark 5 million volts of electricity. But he said he's not disappointed the new device will shatter his record.
"We're part of it so we're not disappointed," Cox said. "They tested it two nights ago and it's working good."
